Er, let's see... Korea on August 15th, and India on the same day. Also Malaysia on August 31st, and Indonesia on the 17th. Beautiful Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States of America (USA) on August 21, 1959.

And by the way, August is also known as National Back To School Month! (Ahh Mum... do I have to go?) Does that explain why so many August calendars are purchased at that time? (Don't forget Senior Citizen's Day on the 21st either!)
