In 1999, eleven women from the District Women's Institute in North Yorkshire, England posed nude on a year 2000 calendar printed to raise money, initially with the aim of purchasing a sofa for the visitors lounge in the hospital!

The funds from calendar sales have continued to benefit leukemia research after the death of John Baker, Assistant National Park Officer for the Yorkshire Dales and husband of WI (Women's Institute) member Angela, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1998.

Amazing Calendar Girls

The 2000 Alternative WI Calendar (or Calendar Girls calendar), as it was named, was released in April, 1999 and became a runaway success, selling out in the first week.

They then printed an additional 10,000 calendars - all of which were gone within three weeks. Long story short - in 9 months, they sold 88,000 copies.

The calendar was then published as an American version (June 2000-Dec 2001) and that year went on to sell 202,000 copies.

What made the whole venture unusual was that the models were all just local ladies in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Since the girls calendars were so popular, a movie was created called 'Calendar Girls' based on this same story.

Since 2000, the Calendar Girls have produced calendars for 2004, 2005, 2007. The 2008 calendar was a special recipe calendar with their favourite Yorkshire recipes on the back of each month.

Currently they have launched a 2010 Calendar with all new full colour photography and are hoping to raise 2 million English pounds for Leukaemia Research.

Most of the movie is beautifully photographed in rural England and it is simply idyllic. This is in sharp contrast to the unsavory scenes filmed in Hollywood (when the ladies appear on The Tonight Show.) The story is heartwarming, but avoids being syrupy. The nude scenes are tastefully done, and played for laughs, as one would expect. The real calendar, by the way, has so far raised $1.6M for a new cancer hospital wing (and the new sofa). I heartily recommend this refreshing and well-made comedy.
