That region was once called MesoAmerica. Great name, eh? Now, you see, we know those MesoAmerican dudes were pretty cool, not only because they had a unique 260 day calendar, but their culture also developed... "...complex sociopolitical systems, reached advanced technological, scientific, and mathematical levels, and participated in long distance interaction networks that resulted in new ideas and ideology." There you go. Clever eh? They used a 260 day, 365 day calendar, and a 584 day Venus calendar too. (This tracked the appearance of venus as the morning and evening stars).
Not only were the Mayans skilled astronomers and extremely accurate planetary observers...They also had their own numbering system, pictographic and hieroglyphic writing systems, (practiced a few various forms of sacrifice too) and probably knew exactly what the future would hold, and probably the past too. I bet they knew the Internet would eventually arrive... Was their Mayan calendar system much like the Internet is for us today? Perhaps. Their calendars were unique in that they could be "synchronized and interlocked in complex ways" which gave rise to further calendar cycles. I guess in other words this means that it was all linked up. You see, while nowadays we use fibre optics to be able to communicate in a flash, and link up with each other across vast oceans, and continents, these dudes did much the same, except they used planets and the stars...
Or imagine... knowing which days are best for resting, or playing, which days you shouldn't go to work, and what days you should tackle big projects because you'll have a better likelihood of getting them completed. Sometimes, knowing the future (at least, a little bit of it) comes in kinda handy... Anyway I urge you to check out the Mayan civilization one day... it's fascinating. It's always good to get in tune with this stuff... You'll love it. Meanwhile I'd better give you what you came here for, right? Here's your Mayan Calendar Selection.
Calendars Of Remarkable Accuracy And Complexity I can't help but thinking just how brilliant these guys were. Incredibly accurate calendars, and check out the ancient Mayan Pyramid Chichen Itza, (Yucatan, Mexico). This pyramid was used as a calendar: four stairways, each with 91 steps and a platform at the top, making a total of 365, equivalent to the number of days in a calendar year...
The highly sophisticated Mayan
A Virtual Ancient Mayan Website? This will trip you out. At this virtual ancient Mayan site, you'll get a dose of historical information about the Maya, past and present, and an abundance of resources and links to other Maya-related sites... Amazing. More Cool Mayan Stuff The 260 day ritual calendar used a count of 260 days. This calendar gave each day a name, much like our days of the week. There were 20 day names, each represented by a unique symbol. The days were numbered from 1 to 13. Yep, it's all fascinating. Pop on over to this site to read more.
Just think what we could learn from this
A Prophetic Calendar That Saw The Future? Was the Mayan Calendar something profoundly different than just a system to mark off the passage of time? Looks like it was. Was it a prophetic calendar that could help us to understand the past and foresee the future? You might think so after reading this page...
