I guess it's kinda like that if every year in your Christmas holidays you went to the same vacation resort because you loved it so much, but instead of renting your 1-2-3 weeks of vacation, you actually became a part-owner of a 'share' of that vacation resort... (Meaning you'd also have to pay some of the usage and running costs of the resort too).

And if one year, you knew you couldn't make the trip, then you would just use a timeshare-calendar to let others know that your 'timeshare' or 'prescribed period' at the resort was available... you could then rent out that time, or (even better) give it as a gift to family or friends...
